ARCHAEOLOGICAL OBJECT AND COIN IDENTIFICATION SERVICE

Have you found a coin or archaeological find you’d like identified? Come to our monthly drop-in to get expert views on your items.

WHEN AND WHERE

First Wednesday of every month, noon to 3pm (except January and August)

No booking required

The service runs from Gallery 1 in the Lower Ground Floor. Download our Floor Plan in advance to help you locate it, or ask at the Information desk when you arrive and one of our staff will be happy to help you.

OUR SERVICE

The Object Identification Service is run by our Antiquities Department and Heberden Coin Room in partnership with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). The scheme encourages voluntary recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales. We aim to identify all archaeological objects and coins brought in that are within the scope of our expertise.

EXCEPTIONS

Islamic coins and medals cannot be identified at the ID service at this time

We cannot provide valuation or authentication of objects

Neither the Ashmolean Museum nor the Portable Antiquities Scheme staff members can accept liability for opinions given on objects submitted for examination, or for information provided

PRE-BOOKING

Pre-booking is not required, but let us know in advance if you intend to bring a large number of objects; the service can get busy and we may need to restrict the number of objects to see everyone who attends a given session
