The Department of Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum has a rich resource of documentary material for British archaeology. The material includes:

• Excavation records (with plans, drawings and photographs).
• Topographic files.
• Aerial photographs.
• Papers and drawings on medieval tiles.
• Early manuscript catalogues of objects received in the Museum.
• Personal papers of eminent British archaeologists.
• Details of monumental brass rubbings.
• Exhibition material.
• Object record cards.
• Papers relating to the history and development of the Ashmolean itself.

The Department also holds many records relating to world archaeology, for example papers relating to the excavations at Kish, and in some cases there are papers relating to both Britain and other world sites, for example papers and drawings of European megaliths. This is particularly true for personal papers, where an archaeologist might have worked on sites both in Britain and elsewhere, for example, the papers of Sir John Evans, Sir Arthur Evans and E.T. Leeds.

Over the years various projects have been undertaken on some of the records relating to British archaeology.
