British Archives

The Department of Antiquities at the Ashmolean Museum has a rich resource of documentary material for British archaeology. The material includes:

All of these archives can be explored on this and other Ashmolean Museum websites.

The Department also holds many records relating to world archaeology, for example papers relating to the excavations at Kish, and in some cases there are papers relating to both Britain and other world sites, for example papers and drawings of European megaliths. This is particularly true for personal papers, where an archaeologist might have worked on sites both in Britain and elsewhere, for example, the papers of Sir John Evans, Sir Arthur Evans and E.T. Leeds.

Over the years various projects have been undertaken on some of the records relating to British archaeology. It is now possible to access further information about these using the online resources available from the British and European section of the departmental pages on the Ashmolean Museum website.
