Japanese Works of Art: Acquisitions from the Story Fund, 1985-2002 7th January - 20th April 2003

The late Jeffrey Story made a generous bequest to the Museum for the acquisition of Japanese works of art. Story, himself a collector, was particularly interested in porcelain, though he also wished his fund to be used for anything Japanese. Most of these Story Fund purchases are on permanent display in the Japanese Gallery for Applied Art (Room 26). But this exhibition shows those which are normally held in the reserve or teaching collection - giving us the chance to see works which are rarely on display. It is a fascinating mix of ceramics, paintings, metalwork and lacquer.
