  Silver tetradrachm from Naxos, Sicily
Gallery 37, 'Greek Art in Miniature' display

Silver tetradrachm from Naxos, SicilyThis silver tetradrachm (4 drachma coin) from Naxos is one of the best specimens of Greek coins on display in the Ashmolean and a fine example of early classical Greek art. It dates from around 460 BC. It shows the head of Dionysus on one side and a drunken satyr on the other. The images on the coin reflect the close association of the wine-making city of Naxos with its patron, Dionysus, the god of wine.

This coin was purchased from sale of the estate of R.C. Lockett in 1959.
