  Silver tetradrachm from Katane, Sicily
Gallery 37, 'Games and Athletics' display

Silver tetradrachm from Katane, SicilyThis silver tetradrachm was produced in the last decade of the fifth century BC, a time of great achievements in coin design. On this coin appears a superb facing head of Apollo, created by the die-engraver Heracleides, paired with a quadriga (a chariot pulled by four horses) crowned by Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Die engraving is similar to gem engraving. An image is carved into a die (a hardened piece of metal) in mirror-image to what will appear on the coin. It was made in 410 BC.

This coin was purchased from sale of the estate of R.C. Lockett in 1959.
