  Anglo-Saxon walrus ivory carving
Gallery 2, first case to the left of the door

Anglo-Saxon walrus ivory carvingThis plaque represents the Virgin and Child within a quatrefoil (a stylised representation of a flower with four petals). Four angels surround the figures and the serpent of sin is underfoot. This style of high-relief carving is similar to 11th century manuscript illustration, and the plaque is thought originally to have decorated a book-cover. It is made from walrus ivory which was a popular alternative to more expensive elephant ivory.

Purchased in 1978.
