Four-sided caitya shrine, with images of Buddhist deities
Gallery 21, facing door

Four-sided caitya shrine, with images of Buddhist deitiesThis caitya, or miniature tower-shrine, originally stood within a Buddhist temple complex. Made in Cambodia, in the Angkor period (10th century), it is carved on all four sides with auspicious images in the style known as Khmer. The main image is the four-armed goddess Prajnaparamita (the personification of Perfection of Wisdom), who holds a rosary and a book of scripture in her upper hands.

Acquired in 1999.
