  Attendant Bodhisattva from Northern China
Gallery 19

Attendant Bodhisattva from Northern ChinaThis Bodhisattva (future Buddha), carved in wood, was made in the 10th or 11th century. It would have stood in a temple as part of a group to the left of a central Buddha image. Traces of coloured pigments can still be seen. It probably represents Guanyin, who became known as a goddess of compassion.

Acquired in 1999.
