Tiziano Vecellio, called Titian (c.1485/90 - 1576), Portrait of Giacomo Doria
Gallery 39, near far door, Oil on canvas

This majestic portrait of the wealthy Genoese merchant and diplomat, Giacomo Doria, was painted in Venice around 1533-35. This was a dynamic and innovative period in Titian's career, with commissions from the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, the Italian courts of Mantua and Ferrara, and the Venetian state. Titian's superb painterly skills beautifully are displayed in this near-monochrome painting.

Purchased in 2000 in memory of Professor Francis Haskell.
