Toward the end of the Shang dynasty there was a move toward more rounded shapes with less decoration and larger plain areas. This wine bucket with a swing handle is a common shape in the late Shang and early Western Zhou periods.

Many of the styles and motifs of the late Shang were continued virtually unchanged in the early Western Zhou. However, new motifs appeared especially animal forms with large coiled tails, as can be seen on this gui vessel.
