The mother-of-pearl box was probably made in Gujarat in north-west India. This kind of mother-of-pearl mosaic was evidently much admired by courtly patrons and a number of caskets, dishes and other wares with the same distinctive pattern of tiles survive with elaborate mounts made in Nuremberg and Paris. The casket was designed to hold medicine bottles and apothecary equipment.
