The Latin inscription can be translated: 'Made to [the honour of] George, Prince of Wales, that the auditor of his principality, who each year was graciously rewarded with truly regal munificence, might be mindfully grateful and that posterity might also be mindful. 1716.' Godolphin was auditor of Wales and from 1716, was paid by the Prince's household a regular sum of £200 a year - to which the inscription refers. This cup was likely to have been commissioned for Godolphin himself and his heirs to commemorate the office he had held under the prince and the benefit it had brought. This cup shares casting patterns with a number of goldsmiths, including Benjamin Godfrey, Peter Archambo and Paul de Lamerie. The engraving on the upper part of the body is up-to-date, but the applied ornament, such as the deeply chased scalework, first appears much earlier.
