Small sauceboat or cream boat
Silver
Origin: London
Date: 1737-1738
15.2 cm length; 200 g weight
Marks/Maker: London, sterling standard, 1737-8, maker's mark of John Montgomery
Presented by Jim and Christine Chance, 2005; WA2005.93
T. Schroder (2009), no. 147
Few works with Montgomery's mark have been noted but the workmanship on this boat is extremely accomplished suggesting that it may have been made in one of the leading workshops. The engraving, for example, is very like that found on plate of the mid-1730s by Paul de Lamerie, but the female masks have not been noted elsewhere.
Information derived from T. Schroder, British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean (2009)
