Apostle spoon (St James the Less)

Silver, with traces of gilding

Origin: London

Date: 1520-1521

20 cm length, 63 g weight

Marks/Maker: London, 1520-1, maker's mark, a heart, possibly for Robert Preston

Bequeathed by A.T. Carter, 1947; WA1947.77

T. Schroder (2009), no. 320

The mark on this spoon is of a specialist and is recorded on a variety of finial types hallmarked between 1510-1528. The exceptionally wide nimbus engraved with a cross patonce is a rare feature.

Information derived from T. Schroder, British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean (2009)
