Origin: York
Date: 1682-1683?
8.7 cm diameter; 6 cm height; 121 g weight
Marks/Maker: York, 1679-80 or 1682-3, maker's mark of Marmaduke Best
Heraldry: Arms of the Company of Linenweavers of York
Provenance: Company of Linenweavers of York
Bequeathed by A. T. Carter Bequest, 1947; WA1947.39
T. Schroder (2009), no. 24
The cup is engraved with a coat of arms and supporters and the inscription 'This Bought att the Charge of ye Cumpay - of Lening Weauers Robert Baines Mast Ano: 1685'. Since the inscription post-dates the cup by five or six years the cup was probably bought second-hand. The quality of the engraving, however, is unusually high for York at this date.
Information derived from T. Schroder, British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean (2009)
