tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica)

The figures in this design are reversed from an engraving by Aegidus Sadeler, after a painting of the angel appearing to the shepherds by Jacopo Bassano [see illustration]. A plate in the V & A, one of a series of Seasons from another engraving after Bassano, and similar in style, is signed by Campani and dated 1747.
