The inscription reads Athamsia. Magna, that is (slightly mistranscribed), “Athanasia Magna”, an elixir made from opium, myrrh and other ingredients, used as an analgesic and hypnotic Renaissance pharmacies were a major part of the market for artistic maiolica.
The design of the horseman echoes the famous antique statue of Marcus Aurelius, on the Capitoline in Rome.
