Gold and enamel pair-cased verge watch

Cases: Plain gold inner case with a winding hole in the back. Gold pendant with a radial design in the top and a decorated stirrup bow. Inside the back, the case maker's mark, HT and a further very small punched mark, possibly a boar's head. Gold outer case, the bezel chased with a wavy pattern with enamelled floral sprays and rococo scrolls. The back is enamelled en plein with Higglers? in the manner of Boucher. The inside of the case is un-marked. Dial: A plain gilt-brass dial plate supports a white enamel dial with minutes 5-60 and hours I-XII around a single circle. The centre of the dial is undecorated. Blued-steel beetle and poker hands. Movement: Circular gilt-brass plates with four square baluster pillars. Barrel with ratchet and click set-up beneath the dial. Fusee with chain and standard stop-work, the block elaborately pierced. Four wheel going train, the plain brass centre wheel solid, the third and contrate wheels with three crossings. Verge escapement, the screwed-on potence with a shaped and moulded foot. Steel three-arm balance. Spiral balance spring with Tompion type regulator, the silver index inscribed 1-6. The balance cock is pierced and engraved with foliate scrolls. The movement is signed: Thos Broome London 1732 Thomas Broome, active in 1734. The case maker's mark HT incuse is possibly that of Henry Teague or Henry Cleaver Taylor. Notes: 1. A similar watch signed 'Thos Broome London 1732' is in the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City, Beijing, see Simon Harcourt-Smith, A Catalogue of the Various Clocks Watches &c., Peking, 1933, p.12. 2. While it is possible that the number 1734 in this case and 1732 in the Beijing watch might refer to serial numbers, it is more likely that they are dates of manufacture in this instance.
