Gold and enamel cased verge watch

Case: Gold case enamelled with a light-blue ground. There is a polychrome floral border around the band. The back has a raised border of enamel flowers and scrolls in black white pink and yellow surrounding a central medallion with a portrait bust of a young woman with red bows in her hair. The inside is enamelled with a portrait bust of a young man in a plumed helmet. The gold bezel has a gadroon border. Gold pendant with loose ring. Dial: Gold dial enamelled white with a chapter-ring of hours I-XII and straight-line half hour marks. The central area is enamelled in light blue within a border of coloured flowers. The watch winds through the dial. The blued-steel hand is not original. Movement: A late 18th-century movement with circular gilt-brass plates and four ringed pillars. Mainspring barrel with ratchet and click set-up mounted under the dial. Fusee with chain and standard stop-work; four wheel train; cylinder escapement; polished steel three-arm balance with spiral blued-steel balance spring and a Boseley regulator. Movement signed: Tupman Great Russell Strt Bloomsbury No. 1837 James Tupman & Co., 44 Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, London, 1816-1856. The unsigned enamel case is decorated in the style of those made by Pierre Huaud the elder, Geneva, 1647-c. 1698.
