Terracotta figure of an Ethiopian boy asleep
Greek, H: 6.3 cm. From Tarentum (modern Taranto, southern Italy), and a miniature masterpiece of the Hellenistic modelling of the region. AN1884.583.
The boy, possibly a slave, is curled up asleep at the base of a wine jar, perhaps exhausted, perhaps happily drunk. Given by Sir Arthur Evans, 1884.
