Collection Highlights: Heberden Coin Room
Islamic, gold dinar, AH 77 (= 696/7 AD), 20 mm diameter, minted at Damascus, Caliph / Mutilated Cross-on-Steps.
The coin depicts the Caliph ‘Abd al-malik ibn Marwan (685–705 AD). The designs evolved from the Byzantine gold coinage of the period. Note how the Cross-on-Steps common on Byzantine coins has been modified to transform the Christian symbol, which would have been inappropriate on an Islamic coin.
