Chinese, coil-made red earthenware with red and black slip painted decoration, 48.3 cm high, c.3000 BC.

This urn probably came from Banshan, Gansu, north-west China. The finest of such pots, like this technically assured and confident, are among the most accomplished in the medium to be made by a Neolithic people anywhere. [From the Sir Herbert Ingram Gift, 1956].
