Cyclades and Minoan Crete

Octopus Pot. AN1911.608
Octopus Pot. AN1911.608

The Museum possesses the finest collection outside Greece of material from the prehistoric Cyclades (the islands in the central Aegean) and Bronze Age Crete. The Cycladic collections, which include marble figurines and bronze and obsidian tools, were largely the gift of R M Dawkins. The Cretan collections include Minoan sealstones, fresco fragments, faïence, and pottery, and were greatly enriched by material from Knossos excavated by Sir Arthur Evans.
