Conservation

The role of Conservation is to preserve art and artefacts in order that they exist for future generations. As a profession, conservators work to a strict Code of Ethics. In addition to Ethics, conservators have knowledge of the materials and technology used to create an object, conservation treatment techniques, and a clear understanding of conservation science. An example of new technology being used in the treatment of objects is laser technology, which can surprisingly be used to clean a broad range of materials.

Within the Ashmolean Museum, the Conservation Department places particular emphasis on preventive conservation and is committed to programmes of environmental improvement throughout the Museum. It is possible to achieve environmental control on a small scale (such as a display case) or large scale (whole galleries). Interventive conservation is carried out only when necessary; conservators today prefer minimal treatment where possible. Conservation in the Museum is partly a research activity, combining both material and forensic science, which makes a valuable contribution to not only the preservation, but also understanding of the objects in its care.
