Kevin Coates: A Bestiary of Jewels
17 Jan 2014 to 30 Mar 2014
‘A Bestiary of Jewels’ is a special show of the work of artist goldsmith, Dr Kevin Coates, a London-based artist - a jeweller, and sculptor in diverse materials.
The virtuoso works of art he creates from gold, precious stones, shell, and other exotica, are both exquisite and fantastical and his work is to be found in private and public collections worldwide, including the V&A and British Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
The ‘Bestiary’ of sculptural jewels is a poetic elaboration of the bizarre medieval encyclopaedias known as Bestiaries, which assemble lore and myth about animals. The artist has paired a series of individual creatures with their significant human, where the jewel is mounted in a modelled and painted Bestiary ‘page’.
