Gold Coinage in Britain

Explore the importance of gold in British history - the origin of the precious metal, the administrative and technical aspects of minting, and the design of finished coins.
It will explore the beginnings of the first large English gold coinage since the 7th c. in its international setting of trade, finance, warfare. The same themes will be explored until the Tudor period, and attention will also be paid to the changing denominational structures and the different iconographical themes employed on the gold coinage. The star exhibit, subject to confirmation, will be a rare double leopard of Edward III on loan to the Ashmolean during this period.
