The Ashmolean Museum is campaigning to save Manet’s Portrait of Mademoiselle Claus, 1868, for the public, ahead of its planned export in August 2012.
The striking Portrait of Mademoiselle Claus, was painted by Edouard Manet in preperation for his celebrated picture Le Balcon, 1868–9 now in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
As a rare example of the working methods of one of the greatest artists of the 19th century this painting is one of the most important Impressionist paintings in the country.
