Rick Mather, 1937-2013
Staff at the Ashmolean Museum would like to offer their condolences to Rick Mather's partner, his family and his colleagues, following his death at the weekend.
Rick was the architect behind the Ashmolean's critically acclaimed new building which opened in November 2009, and the new Egypt galleries which were completed in November 2011. He worked with the Museum's staff over more than ten years and was a friend to many people at the Ashmolean.
The Ashmolean's Director, Prof Christopher Brown CBE said:
Rick Mather was a very great architect and here at the Ashmolean we created what I believe is one of Rick’s finest buildings. He had a special genius for the integration of the old and the new, as can be seen at the Dulwich Picture Gallery and at the Ashmolean. This arose from his profound sympathy with the architectural heritage and his vision in placing it in a deeply satisfying relationship with his own buildings. He became a close friend and I shall miss him sorely.
