Charles-François Daubigny (1817 - 1878):
Evening at Bas Meudon
A1004; oil on panel; 38 x 67 cm.
Signed and dated: Daubigny 1874.
Prov: Geoffroy-Dechaume; J. Crosnier.
Bequeathed by Major Thomas Bouch, 1963; WA1963.150.1.
Painted at Bas Meudon near Paris in 1874. There is another painting, taken from the same spot, dated 1869, in the Louvre. The two paintings are very similar but as the trees are taller in the Oxford painting, it is unlikely to have been a copy of the other. River scenes, divided into bands of sky, water and dark banks, are very common in Daubigny's work.
