Jacob Willemsz. de Wet (c.1610 - after 1675):
Paul and Barnabas at Lystra
A315; oil on canvas; 67 x 87 cm.
Signed: JdWet.
Presented by Miss Emily Perrin, 1907; WA1907.4.
De Wet worked mostly in Haarlem, painting religious and mythological subjects in a style that suggests contact with Rembrandt in the 1630s. The subject of this painting illustrates the adulation of the people of Lystra who mistook the visitors for gods after Paul had cured a cripple. On the left, Paul and Barnabas tear their clothes in dismay at this misconception (Acts 14: 11-15).
