Painted on a warm summer's day in 1826 from a site overlooking the lake of Piediluco in the district of Terni, north of Rome. Corot used this sketch as a model for the background of two paintings of the 1860s, Italian Landscape with Morning Sun (J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles) and Souvenir of Italy (Corcoran Gallery, Washington).
