We aim to provide all our visitors with an opportunity to experience and enjoy our collections in a friendly and accessible environment.

How to reach the Ashmolean by public transport

The Ashmolean Museum is located in the centre of Oxford. It is easily accessible by public transport.

The train station is approximately 10 minutes walk from the Museum and has regular local and national services.

The bus station is approximately 5 minutes walk from the Museum.

Park and Ride. Parking in the city centre is limited and visitors arriving by car are advised to use the Park and Ride service. Fast and frequent services link 5 car parks adjacent to the Ring Road with the city centre.

Arriving by car

There are 9 designated disabled parking spaces within easy reach of the Museum: 3 spaces directly outside the Museum, 3 more opposite the Museum close to the Randolph Hotel, 2 spaces on St Giles and 1 space on St John's Street.

Museum entrance

The entrance is on Beaumont Street. There is a handrail up the main steps leading onto the forecourt. There are ramps with handrails on either side of the main steps.

Getting around the Museum

Wheelchairs are available at the main entrance for visitors' use free of charge. Please ask at the Front Desk to the right of the main entrance.

There are four floors in the Museum:

  • Lower Ground Floor: Cafe, Toilets, Lockers and the Headley Lecture Theatre.
  • Ground Floor: Antiquities Galleries, Eastern Art and Ceramic galleries, and the Shop.
  • First Floor: Western Art galleries.
  • Second Floor: Western Art galleries.

All floors are accessible to wheelchairs via the lift.
The lift is located in the Museum Shop on the ground floor.

There is limited access to the Eastern Art and Ceramics galleries on the Ground Floor to people who use wheelchairs or have mobility problems.

Guide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome in the Museum.

The staff at the Information Desk by the main entrance are happy to help you plan your visit.

Accessible Facilities

Toilets

There are accessible toilets on the Lower Ground Floor opposite the Museum Cafe.

Café

The Café is open Tuesday -Sunday from 10.00-17.00.
The Café is self-service; however Café staff are very happy to help if you would like assistance.

Facilities for visitors with hearing impairments

There are portable induction loops available for all Gallery Talks. Please ask your guide. The Headley Lecture Theatre is fitted with an induction loop. Please switch your hearing aid to the 'T' position.

Facilities for visitors with visual impairments

A Large Print version of the Floor plan is available from the Information Desk.
Large Print labels of temporary exhibitions are available in the galleries.
A free Touch Tour leaflet is available for use in the Egypt galleries. Please ask at the Information Desk or contact the Education Service.

Seating

A number of galleries have permanent benches or chairs.
Folding portable stools can be borrowed from the Front Desk at the main entrance.

Baby care facilities

Facilities are available at the Lower Ground Floor toilets.

Breastfeeding

Women who wish to breastfeed their babies in the galleries may do so.

Telephone

There is no public telephone in the Museum. The nearest public telephone is by the Martyrs' Memorial, at the junction of Beaumont Street and St Giles.
