The Picture Library Collection

The Picture Library’s collection ranges across all departments within the Museum. The links below give information about the different collections within the Museum and access to a number of on-line catalogues.

Ordering Images and Reproduction rights

Before proceeding with a Photographic Request and/or a Reproduction Rights Application please ensure that you read our:

If you are interested in purchasing images of objects from the Ashmolean’s collection please complete the form below:

If you are interested in reproducing images from the Ashmolean’s collection please complete the form below. In addition, please also complete the above ‘Photographic Request Form’ if you need to purchase an image to reproduce. If you do not plan to purchase an image from the Picture Library you will need to supply a high resolution proof of the image you intend to use to be assessed for quality-control purposes along with your reproduction rights application:

Ordering images and reproduction rights for works that remain within artist’s copyright

The Picture Library can only undertake to supply images of works that remain within artist’s copyright (where the artist is alive, or where the artist died less than 70 years ago) if prior written permission has been sought from the copyright holder. Please provide a copy of this permission when submitting your ‘Photographic Request’ or ‘Permission to Reproduce’ forms to the Picture Library. We are also looking to receive further copyright holder information to maintain our collections database regarding the whereabouts of the following artists or their estates; any information would be most welcome.

Invoicing and Payment

Once we have received your completed order form(s) you will be invoiced accordingly. Invoices may be paid by cheque, Mastercard or Visa, or bank transfer in Pounds Sterling only. Photographic work will be carried out only once payment has been received and images are dispatched within 28 days of payment receipt. If you require images by a specific date please make this clear to the Picture Library staff. Please find further details regarding invoicing, payment and our ‘Credit card information form’ below:

Print on Demand

The Ashmolean Picture Library now offers a Print on Demand service hosted by PictureCabinet (a registered trademark of Cabinet UK Ltd). This service offers our customers a selection of images available for printing on various materials with a choice of dimensions and framing services. Currently there are around 2000 images available and there is an ongoing initiative to add further images.

Bridgeman Art Library

The Ashmolean Museum Picture Library has been represented long-term by Bridgeman Art Library. We currently have around 1900 images licensed via Bridgeman from our various collections. Search 'prfx:amq' for 900 Antiquities images, 'prfx:amo' for 670 Western Art images and 'prfx:ame' for nearly 300 Eastern Art images

Mary Evans Picture Library and The Art Archive

In 2011 the Ashmolean Museum Picture Library extended its licensing programme with two new image and rights agencies. Mary Evans Picture Library holds around 2000 images from our collections, and at present broadly replicates the material available via our Print on Demand service. The Art Archive holds around 1800 images from our collection, of which 700 are currently available on-line.
