The Egyptian Cultural Centre and Educational Bureau in London
Established in 1907 by Saad Zakloul Pash, Minister of Public Knowledge, the Bureau ‘s role is to promote Egyptian civilization both ancient and modern, religious principles, and the teaching of the Arabic language. The Bureau was based in Victoria, London, until 1943, when it moved to its current premises at 4 Chesterfield Gardens. The building is currently undergoing a restoration project which will be completed in October 2012. When it reopens, the Centre will have new exhibition halls, a library and learning centre, and a cinema. With support from the Museums Association’s Effective Collections Fund, the Centre will hold a series of displays featuring artefacts from UCL’s Petrie Museum. Curated by Egyptian people living in London and Egypt, this will be an unprecedented and unique collaboration between the cultural branch of the Egyptian government, a local community group and a university museum.
