Snow Scene by Nishiyama Hōen (1804–1867)
This full colour woodblock by Nishiyama Hōen (1804–1867) shows a bridge, house and trees in the snow. It may be a depiction of Sumiyoshi shrine, the most famous shrine in the city of Osaka, Japan.
Hōen was a leading Osaka artist who worked in the Shijō style – characterised by its lyrical realism. He was known for his refined and skill at drawing, and was masterly in his handling of colour.
