This little red paper cutout of a deer was published in the 1970s in Shanxi province, China, as part of a series of nine. All nine cutouts depicted animals, including multiple cats and lion dogs.
The traditional folk medium of papercut decorations was often used in the late 20th century for designs with politically connected subjects, such as heavy industry and women workers, as well as for decorative pieces. Many of the larger and more decorative cutouts feature border and subsidiary motifs used since the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
