The Osaka artist Nakai Rankō was known as a poet and tea master as well as a painter. He worked in a variety of painting styles, but this work has affinities with the Maruyama-Shijō school.
In Japan the deer is associated with longevity and prosperity and is often depicted together with the sacred fungus of longevity.
