You can opt in to receive the Ashmolean Museum's regular email newsletter in various ways: via an online form; when entering competitions; when booking tickets for an Ashmolean event or exhibition; when becoming a Member or Patron; when making a donation; when connecting to our free on-site wi-fi provided by WifiSpark; or by completing a paper 'Keep in Touch' form at the Museum. Subscribers receive regular Ashmolean news, offers, exhibitions announcements, appeals, surveys and upcoming event information by email. The contact data provided when signing up is retained for Ashmolean Museum use only.

You can unsubscribe from email newsletters at any time by clicking on the link that appears at the bottom of every newsletter.

Newsletter contact names and email addresses are stored by the Museum's Public Engagement Team on secure servers and shared only with MailChimp which is use to manage the Museum's database and to send regular email communications. Mailchimp complies with both the EU/US Privacy Shield Framework and Swiss Safe Harbor Framework. When competitions are run using Woobox your contact details will also be held by Woobox for the duration of the competition. Woobox LLC complies with the EU-US Privacy Shield Framework.

If you enter a competition and agree to be sent third-party information, for example by a competition sponsor or partner, then your contact details will be sent to the relevant organisation(s). If you enter a comptition but do not opt in to receive email communications, from the Ashmolean or third-parties, then your contact details will not be added to any database but may be retained for the purpose of selecting competition winners.


If you participate in exhibition exit surveys (on leaving one of our exhibitions) you may be asked to provide personal information such as your postcode. By collecting this information the Ashmolean is able to evaluate our audiences to help us both create and market our exhibitions better in future. Any information collected through these surveys is stored securely by the Ashmolean Museum and by our third party survey provider, CRT. We never share or sell your information, or use it in any other capacity. You may also be given the option of leaving your email address to join our regular enewsletter. The Ashmolean uses Google Analytics to collect information about how visitors use its various websites. This information is not correlated with data about individual users.

Cookies (small files stored on your computer) are used to provide certain facilities on the site, such as the automatic delivery of content best suited to your browser, and to facilitate the breakdown of statistics to analyse the domain name and browser type of visitors to the site. All personal information we collect from you is voluntarily supplied by you in the course of placing your order and / or making your enquiry, and is only used to fulfil your order, provide effective customer service or respond to your enquiry: all in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1988.

Statistical data collection

N.B.: It should be noted that customer records are only retained by The Ashmolean Museum Web Store for as long as legally specified by law (currently 7 years for tax auditing purposes). After which, all records are carefully and completely destroyed.
