COOL MODERNISM INSIDE OUT

With Miguel de Baca, Terra Foundation Visiting Professor of American Art at the University of Oxford.

America between the World Wars both enjoyed and challenged the prevailing notion that it was the land of inclusion so apparent to previous generations. Indeed, the United States was then, as now, a nation of contradictions—the flavour of abundance versus the bitterness of ruin, the cosmopolitan delights of the city versus the rich, regional character of the vast country. This lecture examines how modernism afforded visual artists new mediums and methods to deliberate upon the question of what it meant to be American.
