TALKING... NO OFFENCE

THIS EVENT HAS TAKEN PLACE

Join us for a series of short research-inspired gallery talks in our No Offence: Exploring LGBTQ+ Histories exhibition, led by Oxford University DPhil candidates and Early Career Researchers.

Longing for Lesbos: Queer Women and the Classical World

Mara Gold

From Sapphic magazines and Amazonian sports teams to the label of “lesbian” itself, classical women and references pervade lesbian culture. This talk will explore lesbian appropriation of the ancient world, focussing particularly on Sappho worship, the creation of a unique lesbian heritage and the use of the classics in justifying homosexuality.
