Marianne Bergeron, Butler & Levett Curator of Classical Greece at the Ashmolean, has chosen a 6th century BC Attic black-figure plate for her talk. Black-figure plates were very rare in Greek antiquity and their purposes for the Greeks, although still unclear, were different from those that we use today. The mid-6th century BC was also a time of great change in Attica, marked by the introduction of new cults to the region. Marianne will discuss the different possible uses for these vases, taking into account the iconography on the Oxford plate and the contexts in which plates were most frequently found.
