The Wealth of the Shires: The Medieval Mint of Ilchester
1 Jan 2014 to 18 May 2014
This display explores the impressive coinage of Ilchester in Somerset, a borough during Anglo-Saxon and medieval times.
It focuses on three distinct phases in the minting, from Aethelred II in the early 11th century to William the Conqueror after 1066; the second half of the 12th century; and the middle years of the 13th century, when Ilchester was thriving and we have details of the working of the mint and some of its protagonists.
