Ashmolean Opens The Jameel Centre: Eastern Art Study Room
From 4 January 2011, visitors are welcome to the Jameel Centre to view the Ashmolean’s study collections of Eastern Art. The Eastern Art collections comprise over 30,000 objects spanning 5,000 years. They include ceramics, textiles, sculpture, metalwork, paintings, prints, and other decorative arts from the Islamic world, South and South-East Asia, China, Japan, and Korea.
The Ashmolean Museum has an outstanding collection of Japanese woodblock prints, Chinese prints and paintings (historic and contemporary), a fine selection of Indian miniatures, as well as Islamic miniatures and calligraphy. A variety of these works can be enjoyed at all times in the Eastern Art Paintings gallery 29 where thematic exhibitions drawn from the reserve collections rotate on a five-month basis.

• Early Chinese greenware ceramics
• Modern Chinese paintings
• Japanese export porcelain
• Japanese art of the Meiji period (1868–1912)
• Islamic ceramics
• Islamic embroideries and Indian printed-cotton
fragments
• Indian, Tibetan and South-east Asian sculptures
and paintings
The reserve collections of paintings and prints will also be available for closer viewing and study in a new departmental study room, located on the first floor of the new building, adjacent to gallery 29. The Eastern Art study room will welcome students, scholars, and members of the public interested in paintings and prints from Japan, China, South and South-East Asia, the Himalayas,
and the Islamic world.

Tuesday–Friday, 10am–1pm & 2–5pm
1st Saturday of each month, 10am–1pm & 2–5pm
Please enquire at the Information Desk for access.Booking is not necessary for mounted works on paper. Works other than those on paper can be viewed by appointment, please contact us before your visit.
Group visits
Monday 10am–1pm & 2–4pm. Groups must book at least one week in advance.
