Director's Lecture Series 2013/14
The Ashmolean Director's Lecture Series brings you a line-up of speakers who are leading experts in art, history and cultural studies. The second series opens with a talk from the Ashmolean's Keeper of Western Art, Professor Timothy Wilson, who will speak about the extraordinary collection of Renaissance and Baroque silver and exotica bequeathed to the Museum by Michael Wellby who died in 2012.
In November, BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz, will speak about his new book which tackles the questions, 'what is modern art?', 'why is it worth so much money?' and 'why do we either love it or loathe it?' From Monet's water lilies to Van Gogh's sunflowers, from Warhol's soup cans to Hirst's pickled shark, hear the stories behind the masterpiece and discover the real point of modern art.
The final 2013 lecture will be delivered by Dr Suzanne MacLeod, Head of the School of Museum Studies, Leicester University, whose new book looks at contemporary museum design and the recent explosion of museum building around the world.
