China Night Games April 2013

Ashmolean welcomes over 2,300 visitors to China Night LiveFriday

The Museum celebrated all things China at its April LiveFriday. Visitors took part in a whole range of activities as well as hearing from world leading experts in a series of talks.

The night featured live music from The Jasmine Moon Duo, Sweet n Sour Swing, and a Chinese Soundscape and Video Montage from Tim Hand of Oxford Contemporary Music.  We also transformed the Ashmolean's underground café into a very popular Karaoke Lounge for the evening.

We were pleased to see so many visitors participate in our workshops on Mandarin language and Chinese scripts, try out tai chi on the terrace, Chinese massage in the galleries, learn traditional Chinese dances, play Chinese chess, hakka bridge and mah jong with members of the Oxfordshire Chinese Community & Advice Centre, and listen to talks on contemporary art and culture in 21st century China.

We were also delighted to welcome artists Cai Yuan and JJ Xi to perform The Scream in the Museum's atrium, which appeared to both transfix, stun, and amuse the enormous audience that gathered in the atrium for the three minute performance, a response to Edvard Munch’s painting by the same name.

The Museum is enormously grateful to all who spoke, performed and demonstrated at LiveFriday, and to everyone who joined us for the event.

The Ashmolean is collaborating with the award-winning Wilderness Festival for its May LiveFriday Wilderness in the City, and will celebrate the Campaign for Drawing at its June LiveFriday Come Draw With Me.
