The 'Scorpion King' Mace head
(Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; number: AN1896-1908.E3632)

Where is it from and how did it come to Oxford?

It was found in 1898 by British archaeologists at Hierakonpolis, 'Falcon City', which is about 600 km south of Cairo - the place connected in Egyptian tradition with the first rulers of Egypt.

The most important finds from the site are divided between the Cairo Museum and the Ashmolean (Oxford University helped to fund the excavations).
