Some contemporaries of Cuyp
Jan Van Goyen (1596-1656)
Landscape with a Castle by a River
Gallery 41 Van Goyen was an early influence on Cuyp. There are two paintings by Van Goyen in this gallery but neither of these have much in common with this painting. By the time Cuyp painted this picture, he had turned away from the darker, colder effects of weather which appear in Van Goyen's paintings and had added warmth to his skies. This golden sunset effect is commonly found in the work of a number of painters from North Europe who had worked in Italy. There is no evidence that Cuyp had ever visited Italy and he must have acquired his taste for sunset skies and pastoral compositions from seeing the work of contemporaries who had worked in Rome.
Claude Lorrain (c.1604-1682)
River Landscape with a Goatherd piping
Gallery 46 This was painted in Rome, probably in the 1630s, and deals with a theme which is not dissimilar to Cuyp's subject.
