Milk or cream jug

Silver

Origin: Probably London

Date: c. 1745

12.8 cm height; 251 g weight

Provenance: Michael Clayton; bequeathed to Timothy Schroder, 1991

Presented by Timothy Schroder in memory of Michael Clayton, 2005; WA2005.136

T. Schroder (2009), no. 293

This jug is a modest example of the genre of mid-eighteenth century cast rococo cream jugs, some of which were of extremely elaborate design and most likely intended for the dessert service rather than the tea service. For reasons unclear, many of these jugs are only marked with a maker's mark or not at all.

Information derived from T. Schroder, British and Continental Gold and Silver in the Ashmolean (2009)
