Lustred dish with a huntsman blowing his horn

Deruta, c. 1500 - 1520

37.8 cm (diameter); cm (diameter)

tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica); lustred

No iconographic source for the hunting scene on this dish is known, but it has been suggested that the design may reflect a lost 15th-century Florentine engraving. The unsophisticated perspective and lack of modelling, together with the scale-pattern border and stylized plants, are recurrent characteristics of Deruta wares.

Presented by C. D. E. Fortnum, 1888.  WA1888.CDEF.C423
