Basin
Manises; Valencia, c. 1500 - 1530
42.3 cm (diameter)
tin-glazed earthenware; lustred
Although this basin and the ewer WA1888.CDEF.C336 came to the Museum from separate sources and at different times, the ornament matches closely. Before the use of forks became widespread in the 16th and 17th centuries, ewers and basins of this type were commonly used at table for washing hands. The basins have survived in larger numbers than their ewers, and their moulded decoration is in imitation of metalwork. Dishes of this kind seem to have become popular in Valencian potteries at the end of the 15th century.
Gift of Gerald Reitlinger, 1978. WA1978.170
